About Saimaa Protection Zones

Saimaa Protection Zones are designated lands surrounding Lake Saimaa, the largest lake system in Finland and the fourth largest in Europe by surface area. These zones are established to protect the exceptional aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems of the region, with a focus on safeguarding the habitat of the Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis), an endemic and endangered freshwater seal species. The zones incorporate a variety of landscapes including dense boreal forests, wetlands, rocky islets, and shallow bays, which create valuable breeding, nesting, and feeding grounds for diverse flora and fauna.

The region has a rich history of traditional Finnish forestry and fishing practices, with local communities living in close connection to natural cycles. Recreational opportunities include hiking along lakeside trails, kayaking through scenic archipelagos, fishing for native species, and birdwatching in wetlands. Winter offers possibilities for cross-country skiing and ice fishing. Key landmarks within the protection areas include the rugged Salpausselkä ridges, historic fishing villages, as well as nature reserves like Linnansaari National Park established within the Saimaa lake basin.

Visitors appreciate the tranquility of the Saimaa landscape, its clean waters, and encounters with rare wildlife. The protection zones balance human activity with conservation priorities, maintaining the natural habitat while enabling sustainable tourism and outdoor recreation. This area is a vital natural refuge in Southern Finland and an important site for environmental research and education.
